The fastest and easiest method to file a claim or re-open a MiWAM new claim is by visiting http://www.michigan.gov/uia and creating or logging in to an existing account on the Michigan Web Account Manager (MiWAM) a unique claim id will be created.

In order to create a MiWAM account, a claim must have been filed with the Agency within the last two years. To access MiWAM, enter the address below in your web browser. www.michigan.gov./uia

  • Click “Login to MiWAM” to begin the process of creating a MiWAM account.
  • Use the “Sign In With MILogin” button under the Log In To MiWAM For Claimants section. Note: This will only need to be done the first time you log in. Future log ins will not require this confirmation process.
  • The first step in creating an account requires the individual to enter his/her Profile Information.

After you are registered with MiWAM, you’ll get a 10-day temporary password allowing you limited access to your account in minutes. That password will allow you to form file reports, payments and also update the user profile. You will get the authorization code within ten days via mail.

Filing a New Claim in MiWAM

If you become unemployed, you may qualify for unemployment insurance benefits. These benefits are intended to provide temporary income while you seek new employment. To be eligible for unemployment insurance benefits, you must be unemployed and able to, available for, and actively seeking suitable full-time work.

Filing for and Receiving Benefits

Your claim for unemployment insurance benefits should be filed the first week you are laid off. For your claim to be filed on time, you must file by Friday of the week following your last day of work. If your claim is late by less than 14 days, you will have an opportunity to establish good cause for filing late.

If good cause is not established, your claim will begin the week it was filed. If your claim is late by 14 days or more, good cause is not considered, and your claim will begin the week it was filed.

Two Ways to File a New Claim or Re-open an Existing Claim

  • FASTEST AND PREFERRED METHOD: Online – enter the address below in your web browser Michigan.gov/UIA and sign into MILogin to access or create an account on the Michigan Web Account Manager (MiWAM).
  • Telephone – Call 1-866-500-0017. If you are hearing impaired, TTY service is available at 1-866-366-0004.

Information Needed to File a Claim

  • Your Social Security card.
  • Your state issued driver’s license or ID card number or your MARVIN PIN (if you have one).
  • The names and addresses of employers you worked for during the past 18 months along with your quarterly gross earnings.
  • The last date of employment with each employer.
  • Your most recent employer’s Federal Employer ID number (FEIN) (especially if you have not filed a claim within the last three years or have been employed for less than six months) and Employer Account Number (EAN). Depending on your situation, knowing the account number may speed up the processing of your claim.
  • If you are not a U.S. citizen or national, you will need your Alien Registration card and the expiration date of your work authorization.

When calling MARVIN for the first time, you will be asked to create a four digit PIN. Your MARVIN PIN should be easy for you to remember. However, you cannot use any personal information, such as your Social Security number, address, or birthdate, or any sequential numbers like 1234 or 9876.

How to apply online

The easiest way for many to apply for benefits is to enter the address below in your web browser (https://miwam.unemployment.state.mi.us/ClmMiWAM), where you can create an unemployment account and file your weekly claim. As you will see from Michigan’s unemployment insurance agency page, there is a button on the left side of the screen to sign in with a MiLogin (more on that momentarily).

After applying, you will be able to access your MiWam account 24/7. Take note that your selected password will expire every 13 months, so if you once again become an unemployed worker after that timeframe, you will need to reset your password.

One of the first things you will be asked to do is input your Driver’s License Number or State ID. You will then be asked to hit yes on a security agreement. New claimants will be asked on the Michigan unemployment application to input basic information like name, Social Security number, and driver’s license number. You will then be asked to input your physical and mailing addresses.

Answer the questions that follow, which will enquire about any out of state work and whether you are currently in school or engaged in training. You will be asked some questions about your work experience over the last 18 months, which is why it is important for a Michigan resident applying for the unemployment insurance program to have this info on hand.

You will be asked for the FEIN (Federal Employee Identification Number) of previous employers. Although you may file without it, it will be especially important if you have not previously filed a claim with the unemployment insurance agency in the past three years, or if you were employed for less than six months.

Knowing the EAN or Employer Account Number can also speed up your application process. The FEIN and EAN are located on your W-2, or you can contact the employment relations department of your previous workplace.

You will be asked to select your preferred means of receiving Michigan unemployment benefits: direct deposit, or an unemployment insurance debit card. If you choose direct deposit, you’ll need your bank account and routing number. You’ll then be asked to determine if you’d like to Go Green (receive only email correspondence to your MiWAM account) or receive paper notifications in the mail.

The final steps involve acknowledging your Unemployment Benefits Rights, reviewing your application, and then clicking the submit button.
